Working Backwards presents a collection of print ephemera “discovered” from the years 2030–2124—artifacts from a speculative future, brought into the present for us to examine. Like archaeologists piecing together history through fragments, this exhibition invites viewers to consider what these imagined objects reveal about our values, behaviors, and possible trajectories.

Addressing urgent contemporary issues including climate change, equality, and public health across North America, the work reimagines familiar materials through future uses. What will we keep? What will we discard? And what stories will those choices tell about us?

Created by Mia Cinelli, Associate Professor of Art Studio and Digital Design at University of Kentucky, Working Backwards brings nationally recognized work to Princeton, connecting our community to broader conversations in art and design.

Originally exhibited at the Carlisle Arts Learning Center (PA), Working Backwards received the 2025 DesignTO Founder’s Award for its exhibition at Daniels Spectrum (Toronto), and was selected for exhibition at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
